Grading
Mr. Sarlow's classes are generally project based and all students are expected to participate. All classes have the same grade percentage break downs. Classwork, Participation/Daily, and Homework grades all combine as Minor Grades for 33% of the nine weeks grade. Projects, Tests, and Performances combine as Major Grades for 67%. Most students have plenty of time to get the projects done in class, so homework is rarely assigned. However, theatre and speech students should expect to spend time at home rehearsing.

PHONES
Phones are not to be used during instructional time. Students will place them in the secure Phone Zone at the start of class (on silent mode) and only retrieve them when given permission or as they prepare to leave for their next class.

FOOD/GUM/ETC.
Students are not to perform with gum, food, or any other foreign objects in their mouths. Doing so will usually result in a 15 point deduction due to its affect on enunciation and facial expression.

LATE WORK POLICY- Students must complete every project before moving on to the next. WIN will be assigned for students to make up work if they fall behind. When a student's turn to perform comes up, they must perform then, or suffer a 30 point deduction for a late performance. Due to the nature of performance and audience requirements, deadlines are required.

TEST RETAKES are allowed for students that do not show mastery of the material. Retakes usually take place in SAC after school and during WIN and are allowed after the student has reported to Sarlow's room for WIN and proven that they are ready to tackle the retake through additional work or note taking.

TIME REQUIREMENTS- Many performance oriented projects have minimum and maximum time requirements. For example, a student may be required to perform a 2-4 minute speech or monologue. These time requirements are very strictly enforced when it comes to grading. Going under time often results in a 30 point deduction. Going over time results in a 10-20 point deduction. Please time your rehearsals.

EXTRA CREDIT comes in the form of Theatre Reviews. Each student may write one review of a live theatrical performance per nine weeks that will count as a performance grade. There are many shows available for viewing in the greater San Antonio area. Of course, we like for them to see the shows at Randolph High School and Randolph Middle School. Each review should cover five different production elements. Examples would be acting, lighting, make-up, costuming, scenery, music, choreography, etc. Students need only write their opinions of such things and use examples, plus bring in a play program from the show.

The Theatre Arts room is usually available during WIN time and after school for students who need a space for additional rehearsal time.

SUPPLIES- Students should bring their Chromebooks, a pencil, and paper to class everyday. Theatre classes often require some drawing so pens are not recommended. Some sort of folder is also recommended in order to keep things for future reference.
